Directional Signage Project for Germantown

Project Team Members: Hope Duncan, Brian Henning, Jason LaSage, Clark Sherman

Project Description: The Germantown Signs project formed to provide information and directions to governmental buildings, parks, landmarks and historical sites. As signs start popping up throughout the community, this effort may be expanded to include additional locations, businesses and methods to electronically deliver information about upcoming events. Residents, newcomers and visitors will benefit from the ability to navigate through all Germantown has to offer!

RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program)

Project Team Members: Angela Nicholas, Deron Kling, Jannie Boyd, Susie Sprecher

Project Description: The purpose of this project is to increase volunteerism among senior citizens within our community by tapping into their talents and skills to benefit a diverse array of organizations in the community. RSVP makes volunteer opportunities more readily available to Seniors by increasing awareness of the need for volunteers through organized information and free transportation. It is a win for the community and for Seniors and the resulting benefits through shared gifts and talents are limitless.

Conservation

Project Team Members: Ray Borden, Eric Demmon, Joe Rintleman, Tom Zinda

Project Description: In an effort to encourage positive lifelong behaviors and empower 5th graders to be leaders in their community, this project team hosted an energy conservation essay contest at four elementary schools in the community. This included an energy conservation presentation at each school with the theme “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and included the use of an “energy cycle” – an old bike hooked-up to a generator and a lighthearted game of energy feud! Students then wrote an essay regarding what they can do to conserve energy in their homes and what those conservation efforts are. Each school had a first place winner who received a home energy conservation kit courtesy of Wal-Mart as well as prizes for runners up. Winners were announced during Earth Day Week 2008.

Farmers Market Rejuvenation Project

Project Team Members: Michelle Griffen-Wenzel, Thomas Kempinski, Paul Luedtke

Project Description: Diversity in the products for sale, an increase in the number of vendors and patrons, and a historic, and rural setting…welcome to the new Germantown Farmers’ Market. This project, in collaboration with Leadership Germantown, the Village of Germantown, and Gayle and Greg Dombrow, owners of the Livery, will increase the market's size and product selection creating a unique shopping experience for the entire family. The market will provide a venue for local farmers, and crafters to sell home-grown and handmade items. We’ll see you Saturday mornings at the Farmers’ Market hosted by The Livery located on the corner of Hwy G (Division Road) and Rockfield Road. This project focused on enhancing and growing our current Farmer’s Market to better promote our community and the numerous talents and treasures of the people who live here.

Golf ‘Fore’ Kids

Project Team Members: Connie Lloyd, Elizabeth Knaack, Torrie Zambon, Jason Zimmerman

Our mission was to find a way to promote outdoor activities for middle school age children. After investigation we found that Kennedy Middle School’s Physical Education Department wanted to start a golf unit but was having difficulty getting the funds to purchase the initial equipment. Creating a golf program within the Kennedy Middle School Physical Education department will provide another skill for our teens to improve fitness and reduce the amount of gaming, internet and television. It will benefit children who may not normally have an opportunity to try golf, teach a skill that children and parents can do together. The purpose of our project team was to raise the funds to purchase the equipment. We approached local businesses for donations and were able to raise the money needed to purchase golf clubs, golf balls, chipping nets, and chipping mats. In addition, Blackstone Creek offered they services to provide instruction to the Physical Education teachers as needed. As a result, the golf unit will begin May 8, 2008. We hope this will provide a life-long outdoor activity for kids.
